What it does, and what it does not

It keeps new tartar from forming. It does not scrape off what is already there.

Plaque is soft and forms every day. Tartar is plaque that has mineralised onto the tooth, and once it is hard, nothing you sprinkle on food will take it off — that is a scaler in a veterinary clinic. This powder works one step earlier, on the plaque, before it turns into the thing you can see.

What each ingredient is
Ascophyllum nodosum
A brown seaweed from the North Atlantic, fed daily with food rather than applied to the teeth.
Sodium hexametaphosphate
A food-grade phosphate that binds calcium in saliva, the mineral plaque needs to harden.
Probiotic cultures
Six named strains, 750 million CFU per two scoops, listed on the label by species.
Decaffeinated green tea and perilla seed
Plant ingredients with their amounts printed: 50 mg and 6 mg.
Lysozyme
An enzyme found naturally in egg white. It is why the label carries an egg allergen warning.
How it works

Two ingredients do the actual work

Sodium hexametaphosphate binds calcium in saliva. Plaque needs that calcium to mineralise, so binding it is what slows the hardening step. Ascophyllum nodosum is a brown seaweed fed daily rather than applied to the tooth; it is the ingredient with the most published work behind this use in dogs. The rest of the panel supports the mouth environment rather than the tooth surface.

Serving

By weight, mixed into food once a day

The daily amount follows your dog's weight, from half a scoop for a small dog to four scoops for a large one. One scoop is about two grams. It is a food topper, not a paste, so nothing goes near the teeth directly and nobody has to hold a mouth open. Mix it into something moist; sprinkled over dry kibble it settles to the bottom of the bowl.

Under 25 lb
½–1 scoop (1–2 g)
25–50 lb
2 scoops (4 g)
Over 50 to 75 lb
3 scoops (6 g)
Over 75 lb
4 scoops (8 g)

Getting it accepted

  1. Start with half the amount for your dog's weight.
  2. Increase to the full amount over 5–7 days.
  3. Mix into wet food, broth, or something with a little fat.
What to expect

Breath first, the rest slowly

Breath is the thing owners notice first, because it responds to the bacterial side of the mouth rather than to anything mineral. Whether new tartar builds more slowly is a question about months, not weeks, and the honest way to answer it is a photograph of the same tooth on the same day each month. Existing tartar will still be there, because this product was never going to remove it.

Who it is not for

Some mouths need a vet, not a topper

A dog that is already dropping food, chewing on one side, pawing at the mouth, or has visibly red gums has a problem this cannot reach. Loose teeth, a broken tooth, or a bad smell that arrived suddenly are all reasons to book an appointment rather than to start a supplement. Daily care is for the mouth you want to keep in its current state, not for the one that needs fixing.

Sodium hexametaphosphate 100 mg

Probiotic blend 750 million CFU

Decaffeinated green tea 50 mg

A typical breath powder

  • Parsley or mint for smell
  • A seaweed blend, amount not stated
  • Flavouring
  • Bulking agent
  • Anticaking agent

The difference that matters is not the number of lines. It is whether the amounts are printed next to them.

The first four weeks

Write down three ordinary things before you start.

Daily oral care does not announce itself. Owners who can tell whether anything changed are the ones who noted where they started.

  1. 1

    Breath

How close you have to be before you notice it

  2. 2

    Gum line

One photo of the same upper back tooth, in daylight

  3. 3

    Chewing

Which side, and whether anything gets dropped

Repeat all three on day 30. Comparing two photographs is far more reliable than remembering.

What the research actually says

The published work behind the main ingredient, and how far it does and does not reach this product.

    Frontiers in Veterinary Science

60 client-owned small-breed dogs, professionally cleaned first, then given treats with or without the brown seaweed daily for 90 days. Plaque, calculus and breath (volatile sulfur compound) scores were lower than placebo.

Effects of Edible Treats Containing Ascophyllum nodosum on the Oral Health of Dogs: A Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Single-Center Study

That study gave the seaweed in an edible treat, starting from freshly cleaned teeth; it did not test this powder or its other ingredients. It is the reason Ascophyllum nodosum is in the formula, not a result for this tub.

Before you begin

The questions people actually ask.

Will this remove the tartar my dog already has?

No. Hardened tartar comes off with veterinary scaling and nothing else. This works on plaque, before it mineralises.

Does it replace brushing?

No. Brushing physically disrupts plaque; a topper changes the chemistry around it. If your dog tolerates a brush, keep brushing and use this alongside.

How long before the breath changes?

Most owners look at week two to four. If nothing has changed by then, stop, and mention the smell to your vet — sudden bad breath can point at a tooth rather than at hygiene.

My dog is allergic to eggs.

Do not use it. The lysozyme in this formula is egg-derived and it is on the label for that reason.

Is the serving different for a small dog?

Yes. Under 25 lb it is half to one scoop a day; the full table is under Serving above. Start at half the amount and build up over 5–7 days.

Can I use it with the green-lipped mussel powder?

Yes. They act on different things and share no ingredients. Mix both into the same meal.
