Eight actives, and every amount is printed.

Two chews provide 90 mg of DHA from algal oil, 180 mg of total omega-3, and seven other named ingredients with their amounts beside them. No proprietary blend, nothing hidden behind a brand name for a mixture. If you want to compare it with what you use now, the numbers are all here.

What each ingredient is
DHA from algal oil
An omega-3 fatty acid concentrated in the brain and eyes. Algae are where fish get it from in the first place.
Omega-3 from lecithin and flaxseed
Together with the algal oil, 180 mg of total omega-3 per two chews.
Vitamin C, vitamin E and carotenoids
Lutein, beta carotene and astaxanthin: antioxidant nutrients, each with its amount printed.
Turkey tail mushroom
Trametes versicolor, a mushroom long used in food and supplements; 70 mg per two chews.
Ginkgo biloba
A leaf extract, 50 mg per two chews. Ginkgo can interact with some medicines, which is why the label carries a warning.
What is in it

DHA from algae, with a short list of supporting nutrients

DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid found in high concentration in the brain. The DHA here comes from algal oil — the same original source fish get it from — rather than from fish. Alongside it are vitamin C and vitamin E, the carotenoids lutein, beta carotene and astaxanthin, turkey tail mushroom and ginkgo biloba.

How much to give

By weight, by hand or with food

Offer the chews by hand or in the bowl, at the daily amount for your dog's weight. Consistency matters more than timing: the same amount every day is the routine.

10 lb or less
1 chew a day
11–39 lb
2 chews a day
40–79 lb
3 chews a day
80 lb or more
4 chews a day

Getting started

  1. Start with one chew for a few days, then move to the amount for your dog's weight.
  2. If your dog takes several chews a day, they can be split between morning and evening.
  3. Each chew is about 8.6 kcal; count it with the day's treats.
What to expect

Daily nutrition, not a treatment

Ageing brings slower, smaller changes: a longer pause at a door, less interest in a new toy, a different sleep pattern. Nutrition is one part of supporting an older dog alongside walks, play and new things to sniff. It does not reverse cognitive decline, and changes that are new, sudden or getting worse belong with your veterinarian first.

Who it is not for

Read the label before the first chew

These chews contain chicken and soy ingredients, so they are not for dogs with a known sensitivity to either. Ginkgo biloba can interact with certain medicines: if your dog takes any medication, ask your veterinarian before starting. For dogs only.

This jar next to a typical senior-dog chew

This jar, per 2 chews

Total omega-3 180 mg, of which DHA 90 mg (algal oil)

Calcium ascorbate (vitamin C) 100 mg

Turkey tail mushroom 70 mg

Ginkgo biloba 50 mg

Beta carotene 10 mg

That is the whole active panel. The amounts are per two chews.

Illustrative of the category, not any particular brand. The question to ask any label is simple: can you see how much DHA is in a serving?

The first eight weeks

Write down three ordinary things before you start.

Changes in an older dog's behaviour are slow and easy to misremember. Note three everyday moments on day 0, then look again at week four and week eight.

  1. 1

    Night-time

Does your dog settle, or pace and wake?

  2. 2

    Familiar routes

Any hesitation at doors, stairs or corners at home?

  3. 3

    Interaction

How quickly does your dog respond to their name or a greeting?

This is a daily food supplement, not a treatment. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Your veterinarian is the right person to ask about changes in your dog's behaviour.

What the research actually says

Studies on nutrition and the ageing canine brain — including the one that found no effect. None tested these chews.

    Frontiers in Nutrition

87 client-owned senior dogs with signs of cognitive dysfunction ate a control diet or one of two complete diets with MCT oil and a nutrient blend including DHA and antioxidants, for 90 days. The 6.5% MCT diet improved all six sign categories; the control diet improved four.

None of these studies tested these chews. Two used complete diets and one a different supplement, at their own amounts, and one large study found no effect. We list them so you can see the state of the evidence, not as a promise.

Before you order

The questions people actually ask.

My dog has been diagnosed with cognitive dysfunction. Can this replace the treatment?

No. It is daily nutrition, not a treatment for any condition. Keep to your veterinarian's plan and ask them whether a supplement fits alongside it.

Why algal oil and not fish oil?

Algal oil is a direct source of DHA, which lets us state the DHA amount precisely: 90 mg per two chews. The chews do not contain fish.

My dog takes medication.

Ask your veterinarian first. Ginkgo biloba can interact with certain medicines, which is why it is printed as a warning on the label.

How long before I notice anything?

Give it at least four to eight weeks of daily use, and write down where you started. Dogs differ, and some owners notice nothing; an honest comparison needs notes, not memory.

Can my dog have this with the other Dogevera products?

Yes, they are separate formulas. If you give more than one chew product, count the calories with the day's treats.

My dog is allergic to chicken.

Do not use it. The chews contain chicken and soy ingredients.
