Where it comes from

The green-lipped mussel is native to New Zealand waters and the species grows nowhere else. Ours is New Zealand-sourced mussel, dried and milled into powder with nothing added on the way — which is also why the colour and smell shift a little from batch to batch.

What is actually in green-lipped mussel
ETA omega-3
A marine fatty acid naturally present in green-lipped mussel. Canine studies generally test whole mussel preparations, extracts or enriched diets, not isolated ETA; their results cannot be attributed to ETA alone.
EPA and DHA
The two omega-3s people know from fish oil, present here in the whole-food matrix rather than as an isolated oil.
Glycosaminoglycans
The family of molecules that includes chondroitin — structural components of cartilage and joint fluid.
Naturally occurring chondroitin
Present as part of the mussel itself, not added afterwards as a separate powder.
Minerals
Zinc, copper, manganese and selenium occur naturally in the shellfish; nothing is spiked in.
Carotenoids
The pigments that give the powder its colour, and part of why it is processed cold rather than heat-dried.

About the smell

It smells like the sea. That is the point.

Dried mussel smells like dried mussel. Powders that smell like bacon or beef get that smell from flavourings, and flavourings take up room that mussel would otherwise occupy. A strong marine smell is the most honest signal you have that there is nothing else in the jar.

If your dog hesitates the first time

  1. Begin with half the suggested amount.
  2. Gradually increase to the suggested daily amount.
  3. Amounts may be split between AM and PM.
How to serve it

Into food they already eat.

Stir the powder through wet food, broth, or anything with moisture. On dry kibble the powder slides to the bottom of the bowl, and powder at the bottom of the bowl is a serving your dog did not get.

How to read a joint supplement label

This jar

New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) powder — 100%

That is the end of the ingredient list.

A typical joint blend

  • Glucosamine
  • Chondroitin
  • MSM
  • Green-lipped mussel — amount often undisclosed
  • Natural flavouring
  • Maltodextrin
  • Silicon dioxide
  • Preservative

Illustrative of the category, not any particular brand. The point is not that blends are bad — it is that when a label reads like the column on the right, you cannot tell how much mussel you are actually buying.

The first four weeks

Give it four weeks, and write things down.

Daily nutrition does not announce itself. The owners who can tell whether anything changed are the ones who noted where they started. Pick three ordinary moments and write them down on day 0, day 14 and day 28.

What it actually costs

2,06 kr.Per 1 g portion

The number on the front is not the number that matters.

One 100 g jar contains 100 portions of 1 g. The cost below is per 1 g portion, not a fixed daily dose. Daily use and supply duration depend on the label weight band and the number of dogs.

Servings per jar
Up to approx. 100

1 scoop = 1 g; one jar contains 100 g. Label daily amounts are 0.5–1 / 2 / 3 / 4 g for the four pound ranges. Stock estimates use 1 g/day for the smallest band, giving approximately 100 / 50 / 33 / 25 days per jar. For your household estimate, use the dog and supply selector above.

Before you order

The questions people actually ask.

My dog is picky. Will he even eat this?

Begin with half the suggested amount mixed into food, then gradually increase to the suggested daily amount. Amounts may be split between AM and PM. If your dog refuses it, contact us.

Why does it smell so strong?

Because there is nothing in the jar except dried green-lipped mussel. The smell is the mussel. Products with a mild or savoury smell have something else in them producing it.

How long before I notice anything?

Give it four consistent weeks before you judge, and write down where you started so you have something to compare against. Responses differ between individual dogs, and some owners notice nothing. Your veterinarian can advise for your dog specifically.

How much should I give a large dog?

Follow the directions on the final package, or ask your veterinarian for a serving suited to your dog's weight and health. We would rather you ask than guess from a website.

My dog is on medication. Is that a problem?

Ask your veterinarian before adding anything new to the diet of a dog on medication. That applies to this powder and to every other supplement.

My dog reacts to shellfish.

Do not use it. Green-lipped mussel is shellfish, and this product is 100% green-lipped mussel.

How is this different from a joint blend?

A blend contains several ingredients at amounts you often cannot see, plus whatever carries and flavours them. This is one ingredient at 100%, so you can read the whole label in a second and know exactly what your dog is getting.

Encouraged by the progress so far

My pug has been struggling with his back legs for a while and at one point could barely stand. We’d already been to the vet several times without seeing much improvement. He’s been taking this for about two weeks now, and his back legs seem noticeably less stiff. We went back to the vet recently and the vet also said he looked quite a bit better and that recovery may be possible. He’s still not completely back to normal, so I’m giving it 4 stars for now. But this is the first real improvement we’ve seen in a while, and I’m feeling a lot more hopeful. I’ll keep using it and update my review if he continues to improve.

This stuff is amazing

My girl had a really hard time getting up a few months ago and it honestly broke my heart. I took her to the vet and they recommended shark cartilage. She was on it for a few months but I really didn’t see much improvement. Honestly I had pretty much given up hope at that point. Then at the beginning of last month I saw an ad for this green lipped mussel powder and figured I’d give it a try. I really wasn’t expecting much. I honestly can’t believe the difference. She’s getting up easier, moving around more, and actually wants to go outside and walk again. Seeing my girl acting like herself again makes me so happy. I absolutely love this stuff.
