How much of the scoop is actually mussel?
Most powders sold for joint support are blends. That is not a secret — it is printed on the tub. It is just written in a unit that makes it hard to compare.
The arithmetic takes ten seconds

A worked example

What is actually in green-lipped mussel
- ETA omega-3
- A fatty acid found in green-lipped mussel and almost nowhere else. It is the compound most of the published work on this shellfish is about.
- EPA and DHA
- The two omega-3s people know from fish oil, present here in the whole-food matrix rather than as an isolated oil.
- Glycosaminoglycans
- The family of molecules that includes chondroitin — structural components of cartilage and joint fluid.
- Naturally occurring chondroitin
- Present as part of the mussel itself, not added afterwards as a separate powder.
- Minerals
- Zinc, copper, manganese and selenium occur naturally in the shellfish; nothing is spiked in.
- Carotenoids
- The pigments that give the powder its colour, and part of why it is processed cold rather than heat-dried.

Perna canaliculus, and nowhere else.
The green-lipped mussel is native to New Zealand waters and the species grows nowhere else. Ours is New Zealand-sourced mussel, dried and milled into powder with nothing added on the way — which is also why the colour and smell shift a little from batch to batch.

About the smell
It smells like the sea. That is the point.
Dried mussel smells like dried mussel. Powders that smell like bacon or beef get that smell from flavourings, and flavourings take up room that mussel would otherwise occupy. A strong marine smell is the most honest signal you have that there is nothing else in the jar.
If your dog hesitates the first time
- Week one: about a third of the serving, mixed into wet food or a spoon of broth.
- Week two: about half, same way.
- Week three: the full serving. Most cautious eaters accept it on this ramp.
How to serve it
Into food they already eat.
Stir the powder through wet food, broth, or anything with moisture. On dry kibble the powder slides to the bottom of the bowl, and powder at the bottom of the bowl is a serving your dog did not get.

Thirty seconds at breakfast
The most common reason a supplement fails is that it never gets eaten. Change the method before you change the product.

Mix into moisture, not dry kibble
Powder sprinkled on dry food settles to the bottom of the bowl, and powder at the bottom of the bowl is a serving your dog did not get. Stir it into wet food, a spoon of plain yoghurt, or kibble moistened with warm water.

Ramp up over three weeks
Start at roughly a third of the serving in week one, two thirds in week two, the full amount in week three. A strong new smell introduced gradually is accepted far more often than one introduced all at once.

Change one thing at a time
If you switch the food, the treats and the supplement in the same week, a refusal tells you nothing. Change one variable, then watch for a few days.

Write down where you started
Note three ordinary things on day one — the stairs, getting up from the floor, the length of the evening walk — then check the same three at day 14 and day 28. Memory is a poor instrument for slow change.

My dog is picky. Will he even eat this?
Some dogs take it straight away; cautious eaters usually need a ramp. Start at about a third of the serving mixed into wet food or broth for the first week, half in the second, the full serving from the third. If your dog refuses it outright, contact us.
Why does it smell so strong?
Because there is nothing in the jar except dried green-lipped mussel. The smell is the mussel. Products with a mild or savoury smell have something else in them producing it.
How long before I notice anything?
Give it four consistent weeks before you judge, and write down where you started so you have something to compare against. Responses differ between individual dogs, and some owners notice nothing. Your veterinarian can advise for your dog specifically.
How much should I give a large dog?
Follow the directions on the final package, or ask your veterinarian for a serving suited to your dog's weight and health. We would rather you ask than guess from a website.
My dog is on medication. Is that a problem?
Ask your veterinarian before adding anything new to the diet of a dog on medication. That applies to this powder and to every other supplement.
My dog reacts to shellfish.
Do not use it. Green-lipped mussel is shellfish, and this product is 100% green-lipped mussel.
How is this different from a joint blend?
A blend contains several ingredients at amounts you often cannot see, plus whatever carries and flavours them. This is one ingredient at 100%, so you can read the whole label in a second and know exactly what your dog is getting.
